As some of you may know, Performática operates on a very different economy than a lot of similar looking events. Performática is built on the notion of radical generosity. It is the guiding principle of the event and it is through that attitude that it has been able to succeed as effectively as it has over the years.  The organizers work, for over 9 months, to make Performática happen and they make not one red cent.  No one is featured any more than anyone else, and no one is exploited for their presence.  The event is free and open to the public. People who participate have usually understood this and have participated in it with these notions in mind.  

So you might ask…what is the payoff.  From a personal perspective I, as a co-director, can answer that question in a variety of ways.  

• For me, the payoff is a chance to see a lot of dance from a variety of cultural perspectives and to interact with others who have chosen to prioritize this kind of activity in their lives.  
• I get to exchange stories, methods, ideas, concepts, and action with people who are all thinking about how to best articulate themselves through movement.
• I meet new friends and reconnect with old colleagues, checking in with how life is progressing, what kinds of creative projects they are working on, and what their desires and dreams are for the future. The gathering energy of something like this helps to alleviate some of the isolation I can sometimes feel as an artist creating original works in a global but over mediated culture.
• I get to be in service to something larger than myself.  As an artist who sometimes is delighted to be in a studio refining steps and concepts towards performance – but basically satisfying my own aesthetic tendencies – administering something like Performática allows me to step out of my own personal aesthetic interests and take into account the needs of a large, albeit briefly gathered, community. The feeling that I am serving Dance and all it’s potential gifts is both humbling and healing.
• Along with the service I am able to offer to the field in general I am also touched by the effect it has on my work as an educator. Performática is able to facilitate a huge injection of experience into the lives of the students who attend the event. In 10-12 days, we are able to “teach” more about this field than one alone could achieve in a year. Nothing transmits a diverse knowledge of dance better than dancing with lots of people.  In Performática we gather to share and to aid each other in experiencing different persepctives on the stage, in the classroom, at social gatherings, and in conference presentations.  I fully believe that gatherings such as this and other intensive festivals and conferences advance the field in very particular ways and are an essential part of the growth and evolution of our conversation as movement artists.

¿Por que?

Como algunos de ustedes sabrán, Performática opera en una economía  muy distinta, a la de otros festivales similares. Performática esta construida en la noción de extrema generosidad. Este es el principio rector de este evento y es a través de esta actitud que ha podido tener éxito durante estos años. Los organizadores trabajan prácticamente tiempo completo durante 9 meses para hacer que Performática suceda, sin ningún tipo de sueldo. Ninguna persona es presentada más que otra; y nadie es explotado durante su presencia. El evento es gratuito y abierto al público. Quienes han participado, han entendido esto y han participado dentro de este evento con esas nociones en mente.

Entonces, pueden preguntarse, cuál es la recompensa.  Desde un punto de vista personal, yo como Co-director puedo contestar a esta pregunta de varias formas.

·       Para mí, la recompensa es la oportunidad de ver una gran cantidad de danza, desde una variedad de perspectivas culturales, y para interactuar con otros que han escogido prioritizar este tipo de actividad.

·       Puedo intercambiar historias, métodos, ideas, conceptos y acciones con gente que está pensando como sería mejor articularse a través del movimiento

·       Hago nuevos amigos, y vuelvo a estar en contacto con viejos colegas, checando como va la vida, en que tipo de proyectos creativos están trabajando, y cuales son sus deseos y sueños para el futuro. La reunión de energía, de algo así, me ayuda  a aliviar un poco del aislamiento que siento a veces como artista que crea trabajos originales en una cultura global pero mediada.

·       Tengo la oportunidad de servir a algo más grande que yo mismo. Como artista que goza de estar en un estudio refinando pasos y conceptos para la ejecución –pero básicamente satisfaciendo mi estética personal – administrar algo como Performática me permite salir de mis intereses estéticos personales, y tomar en cuenta las necesidades de una gran –no obstante brevemente reunida -comunidad.  La sensación de que estoy sirviendo a la Danza, y a todos sus regalos potenciales, es tanto sanadora como una forma de poner los pies en la tierra.

·       Junto con los servicios que puedo ofrecer a la Danza en sí, también me veo emocionado con el efecto que causa sobre mi trabajo como educador. Performática es capaz de inyectar fácilmente una gran dosis de experiencia, en la vida de los estudiantes que asisten al evento. Dentro de 10 o 12 días, somos capaces de “enseñarles” más sobre este campo (la Danza) que lo que uno solo podría lograr en un solo año. Nada transmite un mejor conocimiento de la danza que el bailar con mucha gente. En Performática nos reunimos para compartir y ayudarnos a experimentar diferentes perspectivas en el escenario, en el salón,  en las reuniones sociales, y en conferencias. Creo totalmente que reuniones, como esta y las de otros festivales intensivos y conferencias hacen que la danza progrese en maneras muy particulares y son parte esencial del crecimiento y evolución de nuestras conversaciones como artistas del movimiento.
